4-day Itinerary in El Salvador

El Salvador, the smallest country in Central America, is a hidden gem that is a relatively short flight from many major cities in the US and Canada. Perfect for a short winter getaway. Despite its compact size, this tropical paradise offers an incredible variety of experiences for travelers seeking adventure, relaxation, and cultural immersion.

Over the past six years, the country has undergone significant political and social changes under the leadership of President Nayib Bukele. His administration has focused on reducing crime, revitalizing public spaces, and modernizing the economy, making strides in improving safety and stability. These efforts have enhanced the country's appeal as an emerging travel destination, becoming the safest country in the western hemisphere.

One spring morning, I made a spontaneous decision to book a 5-day trip to El Salvador. Since I was only there for a short period of time, I decided to rent a car at the airport and stay in El Zonte, a small surf town located 1 hour away from San Salvador (the capital). If you have more time I’d highly recommend spending 24 hours in San Salvador to visit the markets, the famous library and the main square downtown where all the locals gather.

Day 1: A Perfect Day in El Zonte: Surf, Lunch, and Sunset

My first day I decided to explore El Zonte. It’s an ideal spot for a day of relaxation and adventure. Start your morning catching waves or strolling along the stunning black-sand beach. The town’s surf culture and serene atmosphere set the perfect tone for your visit.

By midday, treat yourself to a delicious lunch at Nan Tal, a must-visit dining spot within Palo Verde Eco Resort. Savor dishes like fresh ceviche or shrimp tacos (best I’ve ever tried) while enjoying the open-air ambiance and ocean breeze.

End your day with El Zonte’s breathtaking sunset. Whether seated on the sand or at a beachfront bar, the sky’s warm hues reflecting on the waves create a magical scene to close out your perfect day in paradise.

Day 2: Los Choros Waterpark

I started my second day driving from El Zonte to Los Chorros Waterpark, which is a natural oasis just outside San Salvador. As soon as I got there I realized this waterpark is visited mostly by locals. I didn’t see any foreign travellers. It’s a perfect spot for families, but also worth it if you are solo travelling or you are visiting with friends.

The water in El Salvador is well known for being warm, but this waterpark is the exception. The water is fresh spring-fed pools, you can explore waterfalls, and enjoy the lush greenery.

In the afternoon, I’d recommend you head to Michanti Hotel in El Zonte for poolside relaxation. The tranquil, tropical vibe is perfect for unwinding after your morning adventure. This hotel offers refreshing drinks, and delicious local dishes.

Day 3: A Day Trip from El Zonte to Mizata: Surf, Sun, and Sunset

The day began with a scenic drive along El Salvador’s coastal highway from El Zonte to Mizata Beach, a relaxing spot perfect for a surf adventure. Upon arrival you can arrange a surf lesson with Casaola Mizata, uncrowded waves, a dream for beginners and seasoned surfers alike.

After the lesson, you can eat at Ishwi Omakase, a modern sushi restaurant that offers a 7 course meal. Everything at this Japanese restaurant  was top tier and it’s a must visit for seafood lovers.

As the day winds down, return to El Zonte to visit its iconic cave. Just make sure you are bringing the correct shoes because some of the rocks are pretty sharp and slippery. This cave is accessible during low tide, so one must be careful and cognizant of time. This natural wonder offers a unique spot for exploration and photography. I saw a lot of couples taking romantic photos as the sun was going down. Finally, settle in on the beach to watch the sunset. The sky’s vibrant colors reflecting on the waves provide a magical ending to your coastal adventure.

Day 4: A Perfect Surf and Sunset Day: Puro Surf to El Tunco

I kicked off my day with a surf lesson at Puro Surf Hotel, a hotel and world-class surf academy set against the stunning backdrop of El Zonte. Whether you’re a beginner or looking to sharpen your skills, the expert instructors ensure a fun and rewarding experience on the waves.

After the lesson, refuel with a delicious lunch at Covana Kitchen, Puro Surf’s restaurant, offering fresh, locally inspired dishes with a view of the ocean. Spend the afternoon lounging poolside or soaking up the sun on the beach, enjoying the hotel’s serene atmosphere.

As sunset approaches, take a short drive to El Tunco, a lively beach town known for its vibrant energy. If you are looking for nightlife, bars and live music this is the place to be. This is the town where most backpackers and young crews stay. It has plenty of stores filled with handmade crafts, surf gear, and unique finds.

Spending four days in El Salvador offers the perfect mix of adventure, culture, and relaxation. From exploring the stunning beaches of El Zonte and Mizata to savoring local cuisine, each day brings new experiences. Whether relaxing at Michanti Hotel or visiting Los Chorros Waterpark, the country’s warm hospitality and diverse landscapes make it unforgettable.

For those with more time, El Salvador’s volcanoes, like Santa Ana and Izalco, offer even more natural beauty to explore. But for a blissful beach retreat, El Salvador’s coast provides everything you need to unwind. It’s the perfect getaway for those seeking adventure and relaxation in a welcoming, beautiful setting.
